- Twenty contributions from international scholars discuss how biographical material surrounding African saints is constantly revised in order to create and maintain a historico-cultural identity. Ten of the contributions are in English; the others are in French and German. Sample topics include Islam and the role of the saintly, holy women in Ethiopia, and the use of hagiographical sources for the historiography of Medieval Shoa. The papers were originally presented at a 1997 conference organized by the U. of Paris and Johannes Gutenberg U. The volume is not indexed.
