Summary
The patterns whereby children leave the family home are heterogenous across cultures and have evidenced a significant amount of change across the decades. Van Poppel (Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute), Oris (U. de Liege, Belgium), and Lee (Californian Institute of Technology, US) present 12 papers that comparatively explore the historical development of leaving home practices in Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, the United States, and Japan; thereby covering both nuclear family and stem family societies. Papers examine both cultural and economic factors in their investigations of household formation and leaving patterns. Annotation : 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
