Summary
A description of traditional Jewish life in Eastern Europe and of the "Oriental Jews" in the Jewish neighborhoods of Vienna, Berlin, Paris, and in the U.S. An Austrian Jewish journalist and writer, born in Galicia and educated in Vienna, Roth (1894-1939) questioned popular antisemitic stereotypes in those countries. Pp. 127-138, "La situacion de los judios en la Rusia sovietica, " survey Tsarist persecution and the communist attempt to solve the "class" problem presented by the Jews. The final chapter (p. 141-159) consists of an introduction, written in 1939, to a proposed new edition; it denounces Nazi persecution of German Jews.
