Summary
Describes life in the Austrian region of Styria during the Nazi period, based on local archives. Ch. 4 (pp. 167-184), "NS-Rassenpolitik", notes the success of antisemitic propaganda although there were only 2,200 Jews in the region. Immediately after the Anschluss in March 1938, confiscations, expulsions, and imprisonment of Jews began, and pogroms broke out on November 9th. Johannes Ude, a theology professor who had campaigned vigorously for union with Germany, protested to the government and was expelled from Styria. By 1939 most Jews had left Styria. Notes that 10,000 Hungarian Jews passed through Styria on their way to Mauthausen. Many were murdered or collapsed en route.
