- Summary
- "Comparisons with the United States are a fact of life for Canada. Many studies have emphasized the differences between the two countries and have drawn a fundamental dividing line between them, beginning with the American Revolution. In Regions Apart Edward Grabb and James Curtis offer an alternative interpretation, arguing that our supposed national differences are often exaggerated or misrepresented. Instead, the authors emphasize how historical and sociological processes have promoted more significant internal divisions in the two nations - between French and English Canada on one side of the border, the North and the South on the other." "The authors test their interpretation using an extensive array of evidence, on topics ranging from historical patterns of settlement and social composition to present-day patterns of religious involvement, family and sexual values, individualism, statism, ethnic tolerance, civic participation, and national pride. The result is an analysis of our continental commonalities and divergences, both past and present."--Jacket.
