- Summary
- Discusses the gradual liquidation of Jewish institutions in Austria during the Nazi period. Unlike Germany, the Jews of Austria were instructed to demolish their own infrastructure. Under constant threat, the Jewish communities and Judenräte, particularly in Vienna, were forced to promote and finance Jewish emigration, concentration of Jews in special areas, and finally their deportation. Jewish institutions were gradually Aryanized or decimated, until only the most necessary - hospitals, children's homes, and nursing homes - remained. Hospital patients and residents in the homes suffered from disastrous sanitary conditions, starvation, and cold. The requisition of 2,791,000 RM from Jewish charitable trusts and foundations mainly served for the financing of emigration, welfare, and the deportation of the Jewish population.
