- Analyzes the development of the Vichy state and the power-play among its various factions. Pp. 197-208, "L'antisemitisme, " emphasize the French sources of Vichy antisemitism, rooted in religious anti-Judaism, traditional stereotypes, and fear of immigrant competition. Most Vichy politicians were not racists, but they saw antisemitic measures as a fair price to pay for German recognition of the Vichy government's authority in the occupied zone.
