Summary
A study of the early history of the University of Vienna, founded in 1350. Focuses on the views of university theologians, especially Henry of Langenstein (ca. 1325-1397) who believed that Aristotle's syllogistic logic was universally valid. Ch. 6 (p. 139-169), "Langenstein and the Viennese Jews, " suggests, on the basis of a sermon preached in 1396, that he had tried in vain to convert the Viennese Jews by means of this logic. Langenstein must have known members of the Jewish community whose moneylending activities he criticized. As a result of his failure, he lost faith in logic, quoting from Isaiah that religious truths must be accepted on the basis of authority. Ch. 7 (p. 170-200), "Unless You Believe, You Shall Not Understand, " shows how his successors turned from argument to actual persecution of Hussites and Jews. Rumors of a Hussite-Jewish conspiracy worsened the position of Vienna's Jews, whose quarter was sacked in 1406. In 1421, after another attempt at conversion, 240 Jews were burned at the stake and the community was destroyed.
