- Pp. 98-113, "Episkopat und Kirchenkampf im Zweiten Weltkrieg: II. Judenverfolgung und Zusammenbruch des NS-Staats" [appeared previously in "Stimmen der Zeit" 198 (1990)], discuss the attitude of the Catholic bishops to Nazi persecution of the Jews, emphasizing their opposition to Nazi politics. The Hilfswerk beim Bischoeflichen Ordinariat Berlin was founded in 1938 by Bishop Preysing to help Jews who converted to Catholicism. In August 1943 the Bishops' Conference in Fulda condemned the "killing of people of different race and origin". However, the chairman, the bishop of Breslau, Adolf Bertram, refused suggestions to make an explicit protest against the deportation of the Jews. In contrast to its public condemnation of the euthanasia program, the Catholic Church did not make any public declaration against the persecution of the Jews. Explains this policy by the lack of exact information on the extermination amongst Church leaders and the German people.
