Description
2 volumes; 23 cm.
Summary
The first part of vol. I (pp. 37-197) deals with the expulsion of Jewish, socialist, and communist elements from German cultural life after 1933. Describes actions taken against writers, musicians, painters, and actors as representatives of "degenerate art." The new cultural organizations were totally dependent on Goebbels' Ministry of Propaganda. A large number of intellectuals and artists, many of them Jewish, emigrated from Germany. Pp. 153-159 deal with the problems of assimilated Jews who identified with Jews only because of antisemitism. Discusses, also, the reception of the refugees in Europe and in the USA. In vol. II, pp. 149-158, "La politique etrangere americaine et le IIIe Reich, " mentions the reaction of American public opinion to antisemitism in Germany, which was sometimes more radical than that of the U.S. government.
