Summary

Surveys social, economic, and political life in the Austrian region of Vorarlberg between 1918-38. Despite the small number of Jews in this region (only 104 in 1939), violent antisemitism was already present in the early 1920s. The CVP (Christlichsoziale Volkspartei) included antisemitism in their ideology and used it as a weapon against the Social Democrats. The Austrian press in general, and especially the "Volksblatt" and "Tagblatt", reflected violent hatred of Jews, viewing them as enemies of Christianity and of the Austrian ties with Germany.
