Summary
This large paperback catalog continues the recent joint Soviet-American effort to make Russian art more accessible to American museum goers and readers. The text, by Russian commentators, divides the artists into group affiliations that have little meaning for Western readers. But the text plays a minor role in the book; its focus is the wide variety of color plates. The pictures, from the Russian Museum in Leningrad, span the range of 20th-century styles with only a few pictorial references to Lenin, collectivism, or other ideology. Recommended for strong collections on 20th-century art. (This volume does not overlap with the recent Russian and Soviet Paintings, 1900-1930 , LJ 10/15/88).Hara L.
