- Summary
- The original Church of the Dominicans in Strasbourg, France, was destroyed by fire during the German bombardment of the city in 1870. Also destroyed by fire at this time was the Municipal Library, then housed in the Gothic church building. A collection of ca. 250 stained glass panels that had been acquired by the city of Strasbourg in 1833, and which was also housed in the Dominican Church, survived the 1870 fire. It includes a group of medallions from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible from the first church (1254-1260), a second ensemble featuring the life of Christ, from the 14th century church (1307-1345), and a third ensemble from the year 1417 featuring the Last Judgment. A portion of these Dominican panels is presently located in bays of the Strasbourg Cathédrale, in the Chapelle Saint-Laurent.
