Summary
For almost 20 years, Bahian, painter, muralist, ceramist, illustrator and collector Carybé (b. Argentina 1911, settled in Brazil 1919, d. 1997) traveled to Benin, former Reign of Dahomey in Africa, to visit his friend Pierre Verger. His trip experiences were registered in his travel sketchbook now reproduced entirety into the present book. Benin was the major exporters of slaves into Brazil and the recently discovered Carybé's notes and drawings of local rituals and traditions represent an important reference of the rich African religious and cultural heritage of Brazil.
