Summary
Abstract: The results of the National Day Care Supply Study are reported in this companion to the final report of the National Day Care Study conducted for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare between 1974 and 1978. With the use of many tables the study is described and many aspects of day care centers in the 50 states and the District of Columbia are explored. Data from 3,167 day care centers were collected by telephone survey and analyzed. More than 1/6 of the centers in the U.S. participated in the survey: Part 1 gives an overview of the study, a profile of center characteristics, and day care regulations and compliance. Part 2 contains detailed statistical tables. Data on centers' general characteristics are reported: sponsorship, years in operation, capacity, enrollment, and operating schedules. Data on the children and their families are presented. The services provided to the children, information on staff, financial data, and the degree of compliance with state & federal regulations are all described in the tables. The appendices present in detail the methodology, reliability, and instrument used in the study. (as).
