- Summary
- 10th edition of the International Art Biennale of Cuenca titled "Intersections: memory, reality, new times". The Biennial of Cuenca, Ecuador, continues its consolidation process as a forum open to all expressions of contemporary plastic arts with no reservations regarding format or medium. Under this premise the Biennial is taking solid steps toward a renewed cultural policy committed to principles of artistic integration that do not limit themselves to holding imposing exhibitions every two years, but that arrange continuous programs of dissemination of an educational and theoretical nature to sponsor an effective introduction to contemporary artistic manifestations for all segments of the community. This is the first time in the biennial that a foreign specialist, a Cuban, is in charge of the general curatorship and artistic director of the event: Jos Manuel Noceda Fernndez, Sub Director and curator of the Centro de Arte Contemporneo Wifredo Lam, La Habana along with the collaboration of Reinerio Tamayo, Eduardo Ponjuan and Duvier del Dago. Prizes: Saidel Brito (Ecuador, 1973) for his painting "Nacidos Vivos"; Magdalena Fernandez (Venezuela, 1964) for her video installation "2iPM09"; Sub-Coperativa de Fotografos (Argentina) for the photographic series "San Dario del Anden, la memoria viva de Dario Santillan". Included the participation of artists: Maria Gabriela Andrade (Ecuador, digital impression), Colectivo El Bloque (Argentina, video installation and intervention), Nancy Friedman (United States, installation), Laurent Grasso (France, video), Raquel Rabinovich (United States, installation), Humberto Velez (Panama, performance), Raquel Paiewonsky (Dominican Republic, installation); Lee Man Soo (South Corea, paper painting) and many more. The accompanying DVD comprises the 27 videos presented by different artists during the event.
