- Summary
- "Humans have devastated the earth by spilling chemicals into the water and the ground, mowing down forests in the name of commercial development and industry, and burning incredible amounts of toxic fuels that create fumes and blacken the skies. Since the first ill effects of industrialized society on the environment became known in the nineteenth century, modern environmental movements have strived to counter these trends. Most have failed. But as alarm over global warming grows and the unpredictable effects of human-made efforts to wrest the earth of its resources and ignore the waste mount, current trends in environmentalism and ecological concern make a clear case for not only a new way of thinking about how we treat our planet, but also for a new plan of action to correct our mistakes. The readings gathered in this thought-provoking collection expound on the issues of humankind's domination over nature and the new, necessary ways of looking at our surroundings and our impact on our environment."-- Page 4 of cover.
