Summary

Interviews with ethnic German villagers in Auer, Lana, and Prad in Southern Tyrol (Italy) on their experiences under Italian rule from 1918 to 8 September 1943, and under German occupation from that date to the end of the war. Pp. 246-258 analyze their reminiscences on Nazi persecution of the Jews. Notes that antisemitism was widespread among ethnic German Tyroleans already in the 1920s-30s. Mussolini's anti-Jewish legislation of November 1938 forced many Jews - among them refugees from the Reich - to emigrate. The villagers recall seeing the Germans occupiers, with the aid of local Nazis, rounding up Jewish neighbors for deportation. They claim to have known little about the concentration camps. Comments that their descriptions of Jews reveal a persisting latent antisemitism.
