Summary
The Salmon P. Chase Papers consists of more than 14,000 letters and documents written or received by Chase during the course of his eventful life. Chase was a giant figure in 19th-century America; his interests and activities pervaded politics and influenced the formulation of public policy at the highest levels of state and federal government. During the period from 1849 until his death in 1873, Chase's amazing career encompassed service as a U.S. senator, governor of Ohio, secretary of the treasury during the Civil War, and chief justice of the United States. Moreover, Chase was the most effective political leader of the antislavery cause, one of the founders of the Republican party, and the principal architect of the national banking system.
