Summary

Stresses that the French nation today is composed of many different ethnic groups. Discusses attitudes towards foreigners and discriminatory legislation in various periods. Surveys the status of Jews in the medieval period, including persecutions under Louis IX, expulsions, and blood libel accusations. Ch. 10 (pp. 255-274), "Le peuple sans droits", discusses the "Jewish question" before 1789 and attempts to achieve emancipation. The Revolution led to emancipation but also to expressions of popular hostility, especially in Alsace. From 1880 on, antisemitism increased due to the growth of nationalism and the spread of the "Aryan myth" - e.g. the activities of Édouard Drumont, and the Dreyfus Affair (pp. 373-388). Discusses, also, the anti-Jewish policy of the Vichy government (pp. 411-428) and the political role of xenophobia today.
