Summary
A reevaluation of Jewish moneylending and of the role of the Jews in the economic life of medieval Europe. Jews were very early on relegated professionally to the credit business, a function of Christian religious and economic reality, and were seen by the people as a passive and negative factor. By the time of the First Crusade, the rising urban classes began competing with the Jews, calling for their segregation and marginalization, a process which culminated with the institutionalization of Christian credit (e.g. the Franciscan Monti di Pieta at the end of the 15th century) and the abolition of Jewish moneylending and the closing of the ghettos (e.g. Venice, 1516). States that Christian medieval economic thought which viewed Jews as exploiters and parasites, was a falsification of history. Stresses the Jewish cultural and economic tradition (e.g. in the Talmud and in Maimonides' writings).
