Summary
It must be made clear that this is a map of what we know about Roman Britain and not a balanced presentation of the facts as they would have appeared to a contemporary in any one of the four centuries concerned. The policy adopted in compiling the map has been conservative. All the facts shown have been authenticated by field observation or, as in the case of place names of doubtful attribution, are included by the consensus of received opinion and the probabilities of the case. -- General Introduction.
