Summary

A catalogue of an exhibition, including explanatory texts on the history of Jews in Essen from 1291 until the Holocaust. During the Middle Ages Jews were tolerated for economic reasons, but expulsions occurred in 1328, 1334, 1347, 1495, and 1648. Anti-Judaism was mainly motivated by Christian Jew-hatred, envy, and economic competition. Focuses on modern antisemitism and racism during the 19th century, and on the foundation of Jewish self-defense groups. During the Nazi period 60% of Jewish citizens in Essen emigrated. Describes the deportation of Polish Jews to Zbąszyń in October 1938 and the events of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. About 1,200 Jews were deported. Includes autobiographical reports.
