Summary
""Leukos lithos ... " The "White stone", i.e. "the marble", as the ancient Greeks would call it. Especially when they were thinking about the most famous of them, the Parian one, quarried in the island of Paros (Cyclades). Actually, it was elected by Greek and Roman sculptors and the architects, due to its whiteness combined with its translucency. Such a preference could lead people today to neglect the fact that most of Mediterranean buildings and sculptures, famous or not, were carved in Antiquity in innumerable white or colored marbles or stones of lower quality. The present interdisciplinary studies aim at preventing such a misunderstanding. Archaeologists, historians, together with art historians and curators, members of the Association for the Study of Marble and Other Stones used in Antiquity (Asmosia) are not, are invited, in this book, to cross their own point of view, methods and results with those obtained by geologists, physicists and chemists."--
