- Published as a sequel to an exhibition of documents from Mayer's private archive. Pp. 10-26, "Erinnern und nicht vergessen: Freiburg und der 9. November 1938 - Ansprache zum 50. Jahrestag", by H. Haumann, describes the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the destruction of the Freiburg synagogue, and the internment of Jewish men in Dachau. Quotes eyewitnesses who noted that the spectators protested through silence; no one intervened, including the Churches. Later, there were Germans, especially Gertrud Luckner of the Catholic Caritas, who rescued Jews. Pp. 27-53, "'Mein Judesein ist meine Trutzburg': Der Lebensweg des Freiburger Kaufmanns Max Mayer (1873-1962)", by H. Haumann, sketches the fate of Mayer, a representative Freiburg Jew. He consistently protested against manifestations of antisemitism and recognized, early on, the dangers of Nazism. He was first interned in a camp as a socialist in 1933, and then with other Jews after "Kristallnacht". Describes the obstacles to the family's emigration, the confiscation of their property, and the hardships of their life as refugees. See the book by his daughter, Lotte Paepcke (1989).
