Summary
This book examines the struggle over public education in mid-twentieth century America through a joint biography of Helen Heffernan, the California Commissioner of Rural and Elementary Education between 1926 and 1965, and Corinne Seeds, the Director of the University Elementary school at UCLA between 1925 and 1957. They were nationally recognized as leaders of the progressive education movement and prominent figures in the attempt to put the ideals of progressive education into practice in a state-wide system of public education in the United States.
