Summary
New Women is an anthology of short fiction written by Canadian women between 1900 and 1920. The carefully selected stories by writers such as L.M. Montgomery (of Anne of Green Gables fame), Nellie McClung and Marjorie Pickthall provide dramatic and imaginative glimpses of Canadian society and of the women who lived during these momentous years. In this era of transformation, Canadians were experiencing the Great War, industrialization, urbanization and immigration on an unprecedented scale. Women were fighting for the vote and equal rights. Accordingly, the stories show us women in the grip of labour and domestic issues--domestic oppression, labour exploitation, conflict between family and employment obligations. When one reads Kit Coleman on the life of a woman journalist on J.G. Sime on the life of a female munitions worker, one is astonished at how little the challenges of women's lives have changed between 1900 and 1990. New Women is a timely contibution to understanding our heritage from the unique perspective of Canadian women writers. It is a pleasurable and informative collection that will prove useful to students, teachers and everyone interested in social history.
