Summary
An examination of the political and social situation of Egypt's Jews, their connections with the Yishuv and with Israel, and their situation under changing Egyptian conditions. Describes anti-Jewish activities in Egypt from the 1920s, including the 1938-39 demonstrations of the Young Egypt movement against Jews, calling for their expulsion from Egypt and Palestine, and the anti-Zionist riots of 1948. With Israel's independence, questions regarding the loyalty of Egyptian Jews and antisemitism began to gain force within government circles and were expressed in the media, although ordinary Egyptians did not hate Jews in the way Europeans did and Jews were not treated with particular cruelty. Suggests that even if Israel had not existed, Jews would have left Egypt after its independence due to its economic decline.
