- Summary
- A selection of the holdings of the Collection José Esteve and Aracy Esteve Gomes, with close to 80 photographs taken by José Esteve (b. Barcelona, Spain, 1886 - d. Salvador, BA, 1947) and his daughter Aracy Esteve Gomes (b. Bahía, Brazil 1923) between 1920 and 1970 in different locations of the state of Bahía. This collection was preserved by Aracy Esteve for more than nine decades and is being shown in public for the first time. Accompanying the photographs, glass negatives, prints, postcards and documents were also displayed. Both photographers were amateurs: Catalonian photographer Esteve built himself a photo camera in 1923 to record his new baby daughter and his family, friends and life in the small town of Santo Antonio de Jesús. Financial difficulties in the late 1930's forced him to stop his photographic pastime. In 1950 his eldest daughter Aracy, also a photographer married noted sculptor Arlindo Gomes. In 1970 she moved out of the house and was the end of her photo lab and her photographic career "I was not keen on the idea of having my photographs enlarged at some other lab. I believe that in those days no one but me could understand and translate what I saw, what I felt and what I regarded"--P. 84.
