Summary
Describes the role of Jews in the German and Austrian pharmaceutical industry and retail trade. Christian competitors warned that Jewish apothecaries were a danger to the public; in Prussia and Austria, they were generally not licensed until 1860. Traces their exclusion from professional organizations after 1933, boycott of Jewish firms, and Aryanization, and relates the stories of many individual apothecaries and their fate under Nazism.
