Summary
Laboratory education for the purpose of raising awareness is an important form of emotional learning. By studying individual reactions during affective education sessions, the trainer or facilitator is able to lead the group to greater self awareness. The Small Group Trainer's Survival Guide is designed for the leaders of training groups who need to know how to deal with the roadblocks created by participants' emotional reactions. Embarrassment, anger, fear of failure, anxiety about authority, and many other emotions are considered in this important volume. The authors skillfully guide readers through the laboratory education process, highlighting its theoretical foundations and the role of the trainer, as well as the recognition, prevention, and management of distress reactions in a group setting. Illuminating case studies provide lessons for thinking through effective interventions. Depending on one's skill in laboratory education, this volume serves as a reference, a refresher, an instructional aid, or a conceptualizing aid for experienced or novice trainers. All who use experiential, affective methods in learning--in classes, workshops, laboratories, or other settings--will find much of value in The Small Group Trainer's Survival Guide.
