- Summary
- For the first time, Fundación/Colección Jumex presentes two simultaneous exhibitions in its gallery. This is the first time that two exhibitions engage in dialogue within Fundación Jumex premises, each one under a rigorous curatorial discourse. The two shows - "The Traveling Show" and "El Gabinete Blanco" - are remarkable for their unique character, and each one in its own way demands, a careful and distinct gaze. Adriano Pedrosa, a guest curator has merged two apparently unrelated ideas to produce a particular resonance in our contemporary world. Both exhibitions formulate premises and ideas with the consequences of our current conceptions of museums, while indicating how the concept of voyage is disjoined from other possibilities of transit. One of the themes of "The Traveling Show" alludes to the fractures in the idea of 'voyage' and its representation throughout the last three centuries. Taking the different means of Iocomotion -from walking, which is the most primitive form of transportation, to motoring, and flying in an airplane-as the starting point, the expeditions of artists to Mexico during the 19th Century are rediscovered. The exhibition also analyzes the production of contemporary artists, whose idea of voyage have encouraged their work as nomads. "El Gabinete Blanco" inquires into the two opposing modes of presenting or narrating art collections: the 19th century salon and the white cube of the 20th. The first mode is characterized by a heterogeneous reunion and exposition in glass cases of findings and curiosities that came from new expeditions of the time. The other is its natural successor, conceived as a space of neutrality and foregoing of ornament, whose purpose was not to interfere with the artistic object's own aesthetics. Once the relation between these two modes of exhibiting art works - the salon and the white cube- is established, a question arises: How does a museum operate in our time? Or better yet: what role will it play in the future? Fundación/Colección Jumex holds among its main objectives the imperative of responding to this question, as well as contributing to a new way of thinking about contemporary art.
