Summary
A study of the life and activities of Abbé Grégoire (1750-1831), the Catholic priest who was active in the struggle against social injustice and colonialism. Pt. 2 (pp. 77-120), "L'Abbé Grégoire et la lutte pour l'émancipation des Juifs", deals with his activities before and after the Revolution. Describes public discussions and debates about the Jews and the growth of awareness in French society regarding the need to change the status of the Jews, among them the Malesherbes Commission and the competition in Metz for the best work on the situation of the Jews, won by Abbé Grégoire with his "Essai sur la régénération physique, morale et politique des Juifs" (1788). Surveys his activities as a deputy in the National Assembly which led to the granting of citizenship to Jews. Discusses how these steps influenced the further emancipation of French Jewry.
