312 pages : 16 illustrations; 24 cm.
Summary
Analyzes the "Frankfurter Dirigierrolle" (late 1340s), whose anti-Judaism is purely religious; the Frankfurt passion play of 1493, where Jews are depicted as avaricious usurers as well as sadistic deicides; the Alsfeld passion play (1501) in which Jews are the instruments of devils who incite them to murder Christ; and the Nürnberg carnival plays of Hans Folz (1474 and 1486/93), a friend of Christian Talmud scholars and himself something of a scholar. His plays represent theological disputations in which the Jews are made to confess to absurd and xenophobic passages in the Talmud. In the last of these plays, "Herzog von Burgund", after clowns propose the imposition of humiliating (scatological) punishments, the Jews are banished from the city (as in fact they were a few years later).
