Summary
This report looks at recent case studies on the costs and efficiency of 4 very different projects in Latin America on distance education: 1) In the Dominican Republic, CENAPEC offers youths and adults of low-income levels and rural areas, the opportunity to complete primary schooling and continue to secondary school, 2) In Mexico, Telesecundaria uses distance education methods to assist ranchers in rural areas, at a cost that is substantially lower than that associated with more traditional methods 3) In Costa Rica, the state university for distance education (UNED) offers access to higher education to school dropouts and adults who do not wish to attend the country's traditional universities, and 4) In Brazil, PETROBRAS Access Project offers basic or intermediate level technical courses to the workers on remote oil drill sites. In addition, the report gives a brief overview of the range of experiences with distance education in Latin America and seeks to obtain some lessons for the future.
