Summary
  • Since the 1989 revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe, and the resulting increase in population movements from that region, migration has emerged as a major challenge facing Europe. How many people have migrated from Eastern Europe since 1989, who are they and how does such migration affect the economy and society of both sending and receiving countries?
  • This book, written by independent experts from Eastern (including the former Soviet Union) and Western Europe, aims to analyse the levels, causes and effects of East-West migration since the 1989 revolutions, and the way in which this phenomenon is being approached and regulated in a number of sending and receiving countries, including the former Yugoslavia. By relating East-West migration to traditional migration from the South and to the overall immigration capacity of Western Europe, the book also provides a prospective analysis of the way in which migration from Eastern Europe is likely to develop and to be regulated according to development targets set by both Eastern and Western European states.
