Francis Alÿs oeuvre mostly consists of ephemeral, only indirectly documented performative works. His unspectacular but well-aimed actions in Mexico City are informed by the local mixed culture, its everyday environmental as well as its mythological and historical figures. Alÿs work draws on everyday practices and rituals and playfully applies various procedures to set objects and circumstances in motion, thus undermining norms and habits. Kästli's study is the first attempt at a systematic documentation and understanding of Alÿs art. Against the background of his source of inspiration, Mexico City, she shines a light on its starting conditions and conceptual framework.
