- Summary
- "The increase in frequency of marine mammal strandings throughout the world, and in the numbers of volunteer workers, posed a need for more coordinated guidelines and data collection. This practical extensive manual is intended for the dedicated volunteer, for those who want to recognize various species readily, and for those members of the general public or media who may observe stranding operations. The major mammal groups-- pinnipeds, cetaceans, manatees and sea otters--are described. Color illustrations are included for most species. The 5 1/2 X 8 1/2-inch format is handy for both field and laboratory use. Extensive references are included for each chapter, as well as indices by both subject and species. Anecdotal passages are incorporated in the final chapter--these are entertaining in addition to being instructive"--Abstract in National Sea Grant Library publication website.
