- Summary
- Contains interviews with five residents of Upper Austria (Linz region) on their memories of the Nazi period, including their perception of persecution of the Jews. The first interviews were held in 1987-88, with a follow-up interview, in greater depth, in 1990. One of the interviewees still adheres to Nazi stereotypes of the Jew as parasite; but like the others - including a farm woman who lived near Mauthausen and whose husband was a guard in a labor camp - he claims to have been nearly unaware of the Holocaust. The interviewees generally resisted acknowledging personal responsibility and attributed guilt solely to the Germans. Using a psychoanalytic-sociological method, analyzes the interviews and places them in the context of the institutionalized concept of Austria as victim rather than voluntary ally of Nazism, which absolved individual Austrians from having to internalize the past as the Germans did. Traces the continuity of this concept in editorials in the regional press between 1946-78.
