- Cavaradossi the painter is arrested and tortured for helping Angelotti, a political prisoner, to escape. His lady love, Tosca, promises herself to Scarpia, the chief of police, in order to obtain Cavaradossi's release. When he is executed anyway, Tosca kills herself.
