Summary
"This study provides an account of the ways in which the young working class have responded to the restructuring of work and employment through the development of the 'training' state. Drawing on case studies of young people in Coventry (a city which, since the 1980s, has seen the collapse of its manufacturing base - a traditional source of employment for school leavers) the author shows how the young working class have sought to confront the realities of youth training through their everyday struggles in and against its forms. Far from youth training representing a 'revolution' in training provision which school leavers have rushed to embrace, the author demonstrates how it has meant their being subject to a new and more intense process of discipline and control. These disciplines have not been accepted lightly, many young people showing a steadfast refusal to accept at face value the pronouncements and actions of the 'training state'. As the youth training movement has sought increasingly to process and control their aspirations for meaningful work and training, they have consistently resisted these measures. The result has been that rather than creating a new generation embracing the spirit of unfettered capitalism, internalizing and rehearsing its imperatives and values and celebrating its institutional forms, youth training has given rise to contradictions that have led to new forms of resistance and denial."--BOOK JACKET.
