"The numbers of universities and student admissions in East Asia have increased phenomenally since World War II. However, such gains have hardly been uniform. East Asian societies differ greatly, such as those committed to economic expansion and higher education and others that have stagnated through misrule and isolation. The study of higher education in East Asia can provide excellent insights into the ancient, colonial and postwar history and progress of East Asian societies.
