Summary

A characteristic feature of Andros is the mansions that exist in various places dating from the 17th to the 19th century. They are tall square towers with elementary fortifications. They have many rooms including underground storage rooms, and access is via a staircase and elevated door. The oldest such construction is the three-storey Bisti-Mouvelas Tower in Stenies, with the inscription "Stamatelos Bistis" on the façade. The tower was built by Stamatelos Bistis on the ruins of a medieval, possibly Byzantine, square tower sometime after 1674 and certainly before 1696 when Bistis was already living in it. Owned by the municipality since 2006, it has not been maintained and is collapsing.
