Summary

This is a photographic journey through the poorest communities f the Mississippi Delta. Though the scenes appear to be decades old, possibly Farm Security Administration images from the Depression era, they were shot in the late 1980's and early 1990's. With a passion for detail and compassion for his subjects, documentary photographer Ken Light has captured in more than 100 duotone images the legacy ofsharecropping , racism, and poverty in the Deep South -- a land where time has brought little change. As Ken Light's photographs reveal, there are certain constancies in Delta Time: the vistas and business of cotton, framing every stage of life ; the crumbling shacks that serve as homes ; the faces of individuals who with faith or determination or resignation pass their days in isolation from prosperity. Light's black and white images are full of tones -- like the music, blues and gospel, that streams onto the street from the local club or rises from the quiet peace of a river baptism. A foreword by the legendary civil rights activist, Robert Moses recalls the struggle Mississippi black waged on behalf of freedom during the 1960's. In his afterword, Ken Light reflects on his Delta photography and the struggle of the present. "Every day brings a new vision and new dismay in witnessing the lives of Delta people," he writes.
