Summary
McClinton (theater arts, Kent State U.) provides an account of the artistic and administrative contributions of theater director and playwright Vinnette Carroll (b. 1922) to the Black Theatre Movement and the emergence of Black gospel musical theater in America. He presents a biographical profile of her youth (through 1957); discussion of her early years learning acting and directing; her work and philosophy as a director and collaborator; the development of the song-play genre; the Urban Arts Corps; and a discussion of the Vinnette Carroll Repertory Company and her legacy. Appendices list her acting and directing credits and her off- and on-Broadway performances.
