  • Whatever was mortal of Henry Lewis reposes within these walls [microform] : in the Creek War he gallantly met the savage foe and conquered. Believing that his second tour of duty had expired, he left the camp and returned to his home, where learining that he might have erred in so doing, and anxious to preserve his dearly earned fame, he willingly sought the camp again, and offered to do duty, if yet legally bound. For this temporary absence he was arrested, tried, convicted; and by the orders of General Andrew Jackson, shot to death. His sympathising brethren in arms, detailed for the execution of this revolting sentence sought to miss the gallant youth. His life fled not at the first fire, humanity anxiously prayed to live, only that he might wipe away the foul stain. He died in extreme agony on the evening of the 21st February, 1815 / this monument errected by numerous freemen of these United States, will perpatuate their respect for the virtues of a brave militia man. Whilst it manifests to the world that the renown of a military hero, can never be permitted to render them insensible either to his crualties, or to their rights. July 4, 1828.
